Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)

How it works and how it can be improved?

A Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is a point-based system that assigns scores to candidates based on their qualifications. Candidates with higher CRS scores in the express entry pool are invited to submit their application for Canada PR Visa

CRS system assigns scores based on four factors: Core human capital factors, Spouse or common-law partner factors, Skill transferability factors, and Additional factors.

Core Human Capital Factors

There are six factors used to evaluate a candidates profile:

  • Age: Candidates between 18 to 47 years of age receive a maximum score of 110 points.
  • Education: Candidates receive points based on their level of education, with a maximum of 150 points for the doctorate level of education.
  • Language proficiency: Candidates receive points based on their ability to read, speak, write, and listen to a language. Candidates can receive a maximum of 136 points.
  • Work experience: A maximum of 80 points are available for candidates who have worked for at least six years in a skilled occupation.
  • Arranged employment: A candidate with a valid job offer from a Canadian employer may get up to 200 points.
  • Adaptability: Candidates can receive extra points based on factors like their spouse or common-law partners moving to Canada, previous study or work experience in Canada, etc.

Spouse or Common-law Partner Factors

If a candidate’s spouse or common-law partner is also moving to Canada with them, they receive points based on four factors: Education, Language Proficiency, Work experience, and Adaptability.

Skill Transferability Factors

This factor assesses the candidate’s skills and experience and how successfully they can be transferred to the Canadian labor market. There are five factors: Education, Language proficiency, Canadian work experience, Foreign work experience, and Certificate of qualification.

Additional Factors

Candidates get extra points based on other factors like – Nomination certificate from a province or territory, a job-offer letter, study experience in Canada, etc.

Tips to Improve CRS score

  • Improve language proficiency test result: Language proficiency is a significant factor under CRS. Therefore, taking language classes, practicing classes, and improving language skills can improve your CRS score. A higher score in IELTS or CELPIP will result in a higher CRS score.
  • Get more work experience: If a candidate has less than three years of work experience, try to get more work experience in your field or obtain additional work experience in Canada. Canadian work experience is precious.
  • Pursue higher education: If a candidate has not completed a post-secondary education program, pursuing one can increase the CRS score. Additionally, getting a degree or diploma from a Canadian educational institution can earn extra points.
  • Apply for a provincial nomination: Getting a provincial nomination gets a candidate CRS to score a significant boost of 600 points.
  • Get a job offer: If a candidate can get a job-offer letter from a Canadian employer, their CRS score can significantly boost and increase their chance of getting an ITA.
